With a total investment of $1.4 billion, the plant is owned by PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power) and is expected to become Vietnam’s first LNG project.

Location and Scale

The plant has a capacity ranging from 1,500 to 1,624 MW, divided into two units, promising a significant contribution to national electricity output, projected to reach 9 billion kWh annually. Utilizing LNG, a cleaner and less polluting energy source compared to coal, the project is at the forefront of cleaner energy transition trends.

Timeline and Contract

The project’s timeline has several noteworthy milestones:

  • Boiler firing at Nhon Trach 3 is expected to be completed by January 2025.
  • To ensure commercial electricity output, a power purchase agreement was signed with EVN EPTC on October 4, 2024.
  • The gas supply contract with PV GAS is also nearing completion to ensure a stable gas supply.
  • The project connects to the national grid via a 500 kV line.

Technology and Efficiency

The Nhon Trach Power Plant will use advanced gas turbine technology from General Electric (GE), notable for the highest efficiency at present. This technology not only helps optimize efficiency but is also a strategic move to enhance the competitive ability of the regional power grid.

Strategic Role

This power plant plays a significant strategic role in supplementing a stable energy source, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources such as hydropower and coal-fired power. The project also promises significant economic and social benefits, boosting industrial development in Dong Nai and the Southeast region.

Challenges and Future Orientation

The biggest challenge of the project is arranging funding and operational management. Additionally, the project’s PPA contract creates an important framework, serving as a negotiation basis for other LNG projects according to Power Development Plan VIII in the future.

The success of the Nhon Trach Power Plant is not only the energy sector’s success but also a testament to technological adaptability and progress amidst Vietnam’s major energy transition.

Electrical and Transmission Systems at Nhon Trach Industrial Area

The power evacuation system of the power plant is invested and built by the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) with the 220kV Nhon Trach 3 – My Xuan – Cat Lai line. The transmission power project management unit (NPTPMB) oversees the construction of this system and ensures construction progress at all critical times, aiding timely power evacuation for the Nhon Trach power plant.

The power system at Nhon Trach Industrial Area holds a key role in stabilizing production and business in Dong Nai. Electricity supply and management activities are indispensable factors to support sustainable development for industrial zones in this region.

  • Power Supply: Thanks to connection with the national grid through Nhon Trach substations like Tuy Ha 110/22kV Substation and Nhon Trach V 110/22kV Substation, ensures stable voltage supply for the entire area. These substations hold strategic significance in the transmission system, helping ensure Nhon Trach’s electrical capacity always meets standards.

  • Operational Management: IDICO – UDICO company manages the two main substations with a total capacity of 418 MVA, ensuring that the operation of the system is maintained continuously and safely.

  • Power Supply for Industrial Zones: Nhon Trach 1 Industrial Zone receives electricity from Tuy Ha 110/22kV Substation, with a capacity reaching 182 MVA, connected from Nhon Trach 220kV Substation to Long Binh, ensuring continuity and reliability of the power supply for businesses.

Transmission and Infrastructure

  • Electrical Infrastructure: Using modern insulated cables to minimize faults and maintain system safety, network devices are always maintained and tested regularly.

  • New Energy Source: Nhon Trach 3 Industrial Area is developing Nhon Trach solar power, implementing rooftop solar energy solutions for businesses with participation from specialized companies like Xenon Solar Light.

Integration Capability

  • Through integration with the national grid, the power system at Nhon Trach Industrial Area not only ensures stability but also meets the large production demands of local businesses. Optimizing Nhon Trach’s power grid is a testament to the synchronized and sustainable development of the industrial area.
